What Pool Chemicals Do You Need for a Start-Up?
When starting up or reopening your pool, you need the right chemicals to properly balance and sanitize the water. These chemicals work together to keep your water safe and clean; without them, algae and bacteria will cling to your pool’s walls.
Here are the chemicals your pool needs for its start-up:
- Chlorine: Primary sanitizer that kills bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. A balance is important for maintaining safe pool water without causing skin or eye irritation.
- pH reducer/increaser: Your pool water's pH level should be between 7.2 and 7.8. If it's too low, we use a pH increaser; if it's too high, we use a pH reducer.
- Alkalinity increaser/decreaser: Alkalinity measures the water's ability to buffer pH changes. A proper alkalinity level (between 80 and 120 ppm) helps maintain a stable pH.
- Calcium hardness increaser/decreaser: Calcium hardness is the amount of calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water. A balanced calcium hardness level prevents scale formation.
What Are the Challenges of Balancing Pool Water Chemistry at Start-Up?
When your pool fills with water, we test it to determine the levels of key chemical parameters. Based on these results, we can adjust each component, starting with total alkalinity, followed by pH, and then calcium hardness.
Achieving a proper balance at this stage involves adding the necessary chemicals in the correct order and amounts, allowing time for each adjustment to take effect before proceeding. Knowing how pH and alkalinity interact, we can avoid any fluctuations that could impact the pool's water quality.
Here are some of the challenges of achieving proper balance at start-up and how we navigate them:
- Stagnant water issues: We shock your pool with high chlorine levels and use algaecides if necessary to neutralize bacteria and algae, followed by a thorough circulation process.
- Chlorine shock demand: We account for the high chlorine demand by using the appropriate shock treatments and applying them carefully in stages.
- pH bounce due to new fill water: We add chemicals in precise amounts and test frequently, which prevents pH and alkalinity from bouncing excessively.

Recommend Start-Up
The pool finish will start to hydrate immediately after application, with the majority of hydration taking place within the first 28 days. This critical time period is when a finish is most susceptible to staining, scaling and discoloration.
Proper start-up procedures including timely brushing, constant monitoring, and adjusting of the pool water chemistry is mandatory.
Due to unique local water conditions and environmental factors, parts of these start-up procedures may need to be taken care of by a trained professional. Our Certified Stain Specialist from Jack’s Magic will use a tailor Start-up for your unique pool to protect the pool finish.
For example: Filling a pool with extremely low calcium hardness, low/high pH or low/high total alkalinity levels may necessitate changes to these procedures. Brushing and monitored chemical adjustment will be mandatory.
Why not call the pool experts today and let us take care of all the work for you? You worked hard to get your dream swimming pool—now is your chance to enjoy it.
